Man on Fire // Taylor Kinney is the new Clooney




When Taylor Kinney auditioned for the role of Lt. Kelly Severide on NBC’s “Chicago Fire,” executive producer Dick Wolf couldn’t contain himself:

“We’ve found our George Clooney,” he said.

Kinney’s scene involved a cigar and a confrontation with a rival character, Lt. Matthew Casey, ultimately played by Jesse Spencer.

“Everyone else had been agro and pointed,” says the show’s co-creator, Derek Haas. “Taylor comes in with his shoelaces untied and his shirt hanging out. As he does the dialogue, he laces up his shoes and tucks in his shirt and by the time he finishes he is all dressed. The way he did it made every word pop.”

Wolf not only compared him to Clooney, but he also mentioned Chris Noth, whose career he launched on “Law & Order.” “This only happens once in a decade,” he told Haas.

Taylor Kinney may not yet have Clooney’s star status, but he is on the right path. And if you don’t know who he is, you certainly will.

Besides starring in “Chicago Fire,” Kinney had a supporting role last year as a member of Seal Team Six in Kathryn Bigelow’s film “Zero Dark Thirty.” “Kathryn is very confident and decisive,” he says. “ I don’t think I heard her raise her voice one time.” 

This summer he’ll try his hand at a romantic comedy, “The Other Woman,” with Cameron Diaz and “American Idol” judge Nicki Minaj, whom he has never met.
